Professional Statement

My journey of discovering my passion for mental health started a few years ago when I was working with kids in a private school. Seeing and interacting with kids who had difficulty verbalizing their needs and forming social relationships with their peers in class, I was motivated to learn more about their condition to assist them in bridging the gap. It was then that I had my first encounter with the field of mental health.

An opportunity came by to me months later. I was kindly given the offer to join the Malaysian Mental Health Association (MMHA) as their facilitator to help to plan, organize and execute activities for the rehabilitation individuals. My role encompassed teaching them daily living, social and communication skills to prepare them to take up more responsibilities on their own to lead an independent life. With the growing interest that I have in the field of mental health and clinical psychology, I decided to join the Masters in Clinical Psychology Programme at HELP University. It was a wonderful journey for me. While I learn more about myself, I also had the opportunity to learn from other professionals from the field in their way of conducting therapy and that widened my view and perspective in approaching my cases.

My primary therapeutic approach is Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT). I seek to understand how the long-standing beliefs that individuals hold play a role in affecting their thought process and influences their emotions and behavior in return. I also incorporate other approaches such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) in my work to explore the personal values of individuals and guide them in setting their goals to live a meaningful and fulfilling life.

I work mostly with adults who suffered from mood, anxiety, and personality disorders. I have also had experience working with children and adolescents who struggled with emotional and behavioral issues. Apart from that, I have also worked with couples and families to navigate through their conflicts and achieve their communal goals through the establishment of healthy boundaries and effective communication.

The journey of being a clinical psychologist is particularly rewarding for me because while helping my clients, I grow alongside them. I have learned a lot about life as I journey with them throughout the sessions. They taught me that willpower is a powerful source of motivation to continue with life amidst all the pain and suffering. Since then, it changed my perception and attitude towards life. In therapy as well, I always empower my clients before they take the initiative to change because I believe that everyone has the power to do it. But whether or not they are willing to do it, it is all about the choice that they consciously make.
